Background of the Study
Genomic epidemiology combines genomic data with epidemiological methods to track and understand the spread of infectious diseases. The ability to quickly track and analyze pathogens during outbreaks is essential for preventing the spread of infectious diseases and designing effective interventions. A genomic epidemiology database that integrates genomic sequence data with public health information can provide valuable insights into disease outbreaks, such as how pathogens evolve and spread across populations. This study at Federal University, Wukari, Taraba State, aims to design and implement a genomic epidemiology database for monitoring disease outbreaks, with the potential to improve public health responses to emerging infectious diseases in Nigeria.
Statement of the Problem
Nigeria has faced numerous outbreaks of infectious diseases, including Ebola, Lassa fever, and COVID-19. However, the current infrastructure for monitoring and analyzing disease outbreaks is often limited in its ability to integrate and analyze genomic data effectively. The lack of a comprehensive genomic epidemiology database that combines genomic sequence data with epidemiological information poses a challenge to understanding how diseases spread, mutate, and affect populations. This study will address this gap by designing a database to support disease outbreak monitoring using genomic data.
Objectives of the Study
To design and implement a genomic epidemiology database for monitoring disease outbreaks in Nigeria.
To integrate genomic sequence data with epidemiological data for real-time analysis of disease spread.
To assess the impact of the database on improving public health responses to disease outbreaks.
Research Questions
How can a genomic epidemiology database enhance the monitoring and control of disease outbreaks in Nigeria?
What are the key components required to integrate genomic data with epidemiological data in disease outbreak monitoring?
How can the genomic epidemiology database be used to predict and track the evolution and spread of pathogens?
Significance of the Study
This study will provide a tool for improving the monitoring of disease outbreaks in Nigeria, with the potential to improve public health responses and control the spread of infectious diseases. By integrating genomic and epidemiological data, the study aims to provide a better understanding of how diseases evolve and spread, which can inform preventive measures and policy decisions.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the design and implementation of a genomic epidemiology database at Federal University, Wukari, Taraba State. Limitations include the availability of genomic data during outbreaks and challenges in integrating data from diverse sources.
